Joomtv manages lots of upload types for different video formats.

Into the backend is possible, after you went into the Joomtv 6 component and after you clicked on Video ->New video, to enter into the new video insert area.

At the beggining is possible to choose between 4 upload types:

  • Local, related to upload files already into Joomla, also files already into the hosting space and files into your own PC.
  • Remote: into this type of upload we evaluate all resources that are already on the web, reachable through URL, local files that we want make reachable into a different area from the web hosting (for example a cloud area like could be the storage space given from the Membership plan or another streaming server for the VOD).
  • Youtube.
  • Vimeo.

Now we take a detailed look of settings and processes of these 4 types of upload.

The local upload has to be choosen when our file is located into the Joomla's area or anyway we want to make it reachable from this area.

The first possibility, named “Browse”, is usable when you have your video files (.mp4) located into the “images” folder (the Joomla's folder dedicated to the media); through the drop-down menu will be possible to select the folder that contains our file (already uploaded into the selected folder), and when you see the file will be enought to select it by clicking on the related radio button; then by clicking on “Import” the system will proceed to upload it, to calculate its lenght, and to make its thumb image.

The second possibility, named “Transfer”, is useful to upload a video from your own device/PC/MAC. This feature allows you to drag&drop a file from your local folders to the browser's area “Drag & drop files here …”. The same procedure can be done traditionally through the “Browse...” button which allows you to explore the resources into your device. When you had selected a file, a check method on the file's type will inform you if the type of the file isn't supported: while the MP4 type is always accepted, other types (for example MOV, AVI, ASF, MPG, WMV) are managed with related component's administrative options. After you saved the file, it will be moved into the destination folder (that you can set up into the component's settings), then will be made its thumb image, and will be gave back 3 video's versions: the original MP4 file (all files that aren't codified with H264 codec will be converted in MP4), an SD file for mobile devices or for slow networks (is possible to define its parameters into the related amministrative section of the component), and an HD file that is used by FlowPlayer for the video's quality choice.

This type of upload is reccomended to choose when the file/resouce is already available into the Web, by URL, otherwise when you want to use a file from your PC that you want to upload on a remote server, reachable through HTTP/RTMP.

The first type (called “URL”) allows, by knowing the whole URL (RTMP/HTTP) of the video, to use the video (of which will be extracted the thumb image and its lenght).

Then will be possible to include MP4 videos or anyway a playable type of video by the player that we are using (we suggest to refer to the official websites for the compatibility JWplayer or Flowplayer).

For the correct working, at the beggining, you have to select the resource type (RTML or HTTP), you must insert the whole URL (from the protocol to the file's extension) and then you have to click on the “Import” button: if we are using a RTMP resource, it won't be possible to select a thumb image different from the other created few seconds after the beggining of the video.

The typology named “Transfer” allows to save the file into a different server from the site's hosting area. Once the file was uploaded from the device/PC/MAC and the user proceeds with pressing the save button, the file is saved on the selected destination server.

This functionality needs valid FTP credentials and is needed to know the ending file's URL that will be located on the remote server. All these informations should be managed by the administrator that will be able to assign, at every user enabled for the upload, its related FTP. The associations and the FTP credentials are managed through the functionality “FTP Server and FTP User”.

  • FTP Server allows to save the login credentials, and the URL from which the uploaded file will be reachable.
  • FTP User, manages, instead, the associations between users and FTP Server. In this way you can both associate credentials/different FTP paths for every user or for all users the same credentials.

For more informations read the guide regarding the FTP functionality.

The “Youtube” functionality allows to use a video from Youtube directly on your portal. The Youtube's policy allows this if you don't remove the official logo on the bottom's right and the advertisements on the video.

The Youtube's video can be managed directly from the player JWplayer, but it can't from FlowPlayer unless you are using appropriate plugins. Then we suggest to use this type of video with the player JWplayer because is the only one that allows to manage the videos also into a playlist and into palimpsests.

Regarding the insert of the video, it's enought to insert only the ID of the video that is shown into the address-bar (when you are on Youtube) or the whole URL (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylLzyHk54Z0).

We write some URL examples where you have to extract the video's ID:

After you insered the ID or the URL of the video, and after you clicked un the upload button, the component will update all the informations of the video including also the title and the description, unless they have been already insered. Regarding the thumb images, there will be uploaded 4 of them of which the principal will be the one used by Youtube. In the end it's enought then to save the video after you completed the not required fields and/or editing the title and the description.

This functionality inserts a video from Vimeo into the Joomtv component, by entering into the apposite filed the ID of the video (numeric value), reachable always from the URL of the resource (for example: https://vimeo.com/167177444).

After you clicked on the upload button there will be retrieved all the informations of the media including title, description, lenght, and the thumb image used by Vimeo. The video will be saved by clicking on the corresponding Save button of Joomla.

This typology of video is shown on the native player because of the Vimeo's restrictive policy and for now is possible to use it only as single video.

The component gives for every of the 4 elements a frontend view (that you can select from the menu) of list type where are shown all elements of that type. Every view has it's own settings to show the elements filtered by category or author. The live has also the possibility to show only the elements that at the instant are online through a double check (date – lenght).

There are also 4 views (that you can select from the menu) of single element type, that the player shows to play the selected resource. These pages contains the meta informations that are setted up into the specific tab “metadata” of every element: TITLE - DESCRIPTION – KEYWORDS and if these informations aren't setted up, will be shown the metadata of the page.

Only the video element has a frontend view to insert or to modify it. This view is accessible through the insert operation of a menu item (it's indispensable the presence of a logged in user for the visualisation) or into the list view of videos, where, always for the users that are logged in, is shown a button that allows to modify the element of which the user is owner.
